Deuce was given her name during the naming ceremony. This is a process in which one is cut and whatever the first drop of blood falls on, is the name the celebrated takes. Deuce’s lands on the two of spades. Quick with her knifes and fiercely loyal to her friends and partner. The society in which she lives is based on harsh rules and strict regimes. She makes a terrible discovery about their lives in the enclave but in an attempt to save the life of her close friend is cast out of her home along with Fade in which she makes her journey topside. As far as female characters go, Deuce is one of my favorites. She has a strong sense of self, and yet still has a vulnerable side. She strives for her own independence. She doesn't believe in gender roles, believing only in skill and natural talent for any occupation. And her never ending thirst for knowledge; helps her strive to prove herself, not only to the community but herself as well.
